This simulation allows the user to catch fish with a net. The real reason for this simulation was to give begginning programers a chance to analyze NetLogo code and try to identify how the variables used in the simulation match up to known "Roles of Variables" ## HOW IT WORKS In the blue portion of the screen fishes swim back and forth with a slight variation in height. At the top center of the water is a net that is ready to drop into the water. When the net is dropped it travels straight down. If it encounters a fish, then the fish is caught and removed from the simulation. If the net makes it all the way to the bottom then the net throw starts over. The goal is to catch seven fish and see what the lowest height of a fish caught was. ## HOW TO USE IT To start the simulation click setup and then go. Then click the drop net button to throw the net. Continue clicking the throw net button until seven fish have been caught. The number of fish slider can be adjusted to increase the number of starting fishes. The Net speed slider can also be adjusted to increase the drop speed of the net. A switch was included to auto throw the net, which will automate the throwing of the net. ## THINGS TO NOTICE Does net speed effect how quickly you can catch 7 fishes? Does the intital number of fishes effect how quickly you can catch 7 fishes? ## THINGS TO TRY Can you set up a behavior space to run the simulation lots of times and find the average number of ticks or the average height of a fish caught? ## EXTENDING THE MODEL Looking through the code can you find the following coding techniques? Iteration: When a program loops through a set of data. Branching: When a program chooses one set of code over another set to execute. Procedures: When a set of code is packaged into a sub set that can be called at other points during the program. Event Handlers: Code that is associated with a user interaction or specific event with in the simulation. Roles of Variabes: Fixed: A variable that is assigned once at the beggining and then used through out the program. Most-Recent: A variable that holds the last state or value. Accumulator: A variable that counts or holds a running total during the program. Aggregator: A variable that holds a group or list of other variables. Best So Far: A variable that looks through an Aggregator to find a desired charachteristic. Walker: A variable that become each item of an aggregator as it is iterated. (Hint: In NetLogo a special charachter is used as the walker.) One-Way Flag: A boolean variable(true/false) that switches once during the code but cannot be switched back until the simulation is reset. Two-Way Flag: A boolean variable that can switch back and forth during the simulation. Stepper: A variable that contains an element out of a predetermined sequence to be used with indexing. This variable is extremly hard to show in NetLogo and not present in this simulation.
