NetLogo is designed to run almost any type of computer, but you may experience problems with older, less powerful systems or older versions of system software. The exact requirements are summarized below. If you have any trouble with NetLogo not working on your system, we would like to offer assistance. Please write bugs@ccl.northwestern.edu.
On any type of computer, a Java Virtual Machine that supports Java version 1.1 or later is required. (Note that on the Windows platform, Microsoft’s Java Virtual Machine is not supported.) On the Windows, Macintosh, and Linux platforms, you can choose to include the Java Virtual Machine with the download.
On all systems, approximately 15MB of free hard drive space is required.
If you install NetLogo on OS X, both a native and a Classic application will be installed. The native application is still in beta. It is beta because running natively is mostly reliable, but there are some bugs. (See “Known Issues” for a list of problems you may encounter with the native application.) So for the time being, if you need maximum reliability you may wish to run under Classic instead.
Saved applets should work on any web browser and platform on which a Java Virtual Machine, version 1.1 or later, is available. If you have trouble, please contact us (see above).
Exception: Apple’s new Java 1.4.1 virtual machine on Mac OS X does not run saved applets well. Some OS X web browsers, for example Internet Explorer 5.2.2, still use the old Java 1.3.1 virtual machine, which works better. Other browsers, for example Safari, are already using the new VM. We do plan to make saved applets function better in the new VM; in the meantime, you may wish to view saved applets in a browser which still uses the old VM. (To see which VM a saved applet is running under, hold down the Control key and click the mouse in the white background of the applet.)
